South Devon Coastal Leader Programme 2015 – 2020

Financial assistance is available for farmers, foresters, rural businesses, social enterprises and community organisations based in the South Devon Coastal area. This area stretches from outside of Plymouth along the coast up to Dawlish and the outskirts of Exeter and the river Exe. As it is focused on rural business Torbay and Paignton are outside the area as is most of Newton Abbot and Ivybridge.

The four main local objectives for the Fund are:

  • To help businesses become more profitable and employ more people
  • To target economic opportunity in recognition of the age profile of the population
  • To help communities become more sustainable
  • To develop local identity and use that for economic benefit

The funding has been ultimately been provided by Defra from the Rural Development Programme for England (RDPE).

The UK Government’s focus for the next Rural Development Programme is on jobs and growth with the following being priority areas:

  • Increase farm productivity
  • Support micro and small businesses and farm diversification
  • Boost rural tourism
  • Provide rural services
  • Provide cultural and heritage activities
  • Increase forestry productivity
